Being an American Airline Fai lure Analysis Engineer at the World&rsquo\;s largest airline is very deman ding and challenging. Many of these challenges limit the amount of time it takes to perform lab analysis. Other challenges require many hours of res earch and development to correct a problem that has to be within the FAA r equirements to maintain the airworthiness of a damaged aircraft. One such event involved major corrosion damage to multiple aircraft interior door s eals and wet area floor frames. Matco corrosion lab studies were conducted on alodine / paint coatings to determine why corrosion repairs on interio r cabin floor 7075 aluminum beam supports corroded after six months exposu res. The Holiday Test Unit played a very important role in establishing an improved paint procedure and inspection tool. Numerous failure analysis t ools employed in the laboratory at Matco are described in this presentatio n as well. Bernie Yonkovitz is a Senior Fleet Metallurgical Engineer (Uni versity of Pittsburgh) with American Airlines located in Pittsburgh\, PA. He is the only engineer that deals with the aircraft structure\, landing g ear\, and engines. He has 30 years engineering experience in the area of f ailure analysis. His Engineering experience includes Electrical\, Welding\ , Materials Science\, Chemistry\, Fracture Mechanics\, Corrosion\, and Mic robiology. He has won many engineering awards at both Westinghouse and Ame rican Airlines. His patents are in electrical engineering and were awarded the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Flight Safety Award fo r his accomplishment in microbe contamination in Jet Fuel. And the Matco L abs Distinguished Engineering Award. Dr. George T. Bayer is a Technical M anager of the Coatings Group at Matco Services\, Inc. He has over 25 years of combined experience in metallic and non-metallic materials\, organic a nd metallurgical coatings\, aqueous and high-temperature corrosion\, and m aterials characterization and chemical analysis. He holds 5 U.S. patents a nd has authored over 25 technical papers.
