Please join us in congratulating Dr. Zee for the honor that will be bestowed upon him by the American Society for Materials (ASM), Pittsburgh Chapter, for the significant contributions he has made to the field of materials science and engineering during the past year. To be considered for the Andrew Carnegie Award candidates must be elected by their peers and have demonstrated an exceptional ability to advance materials science and engineering. Dr. Zee, who was among nine possible candidates for this award, will be recognized for his efforts on April 16th, 2009 at the Holiday Inn Select in Oakland, PA starting at 6:00 pm. Dr. Zee is also the recipient of the 2006 ASM International Fellow Award and the 2007 NACE Fellow Award.

As part of the events planned for the evening Dr. Zee will be giving a presentation titled “Infrastructure Failure Analysis” that will discuss the principal mechanisms by which materials fail in aging infrastructure including deficiencies in original design, fabrication, environment conditions, materials selection and inadequate inspection techniques.  These factors are of primary consideration when a failure occurs.  The presentation will include knowledge based inspection techniques and several failure analysis case histories including a major bridge failure and rebar corrosion of the dome at the historic Utah State Capital building.
