Meet Joe Turek - Materials Group Manager

Joe Turek, Materials Group Manager, has over fifteen years of experience performing research and development in support of existing and next generation Naval Nuclear shipboard power generation. Materials of interest include stainless, refractory, reactive and conventional metals and alloys, along with a variety of polymer, ceramic and semi-conductor materials.  He is the author of over 30 technical papers concerning corrosion, failures, oxidation, cost reduction, process development, defect analysis, and material characterization. He has been a leader in the development of advanced material processing, as well as the application of multiple analytical techniques to resolve complicated material issues.  His projects have included investigations concerning microbiological induced corrosion, reaction formed ceramics, radiation induced damage, steam generator corrosion, thermoelectric semiconductors in addition to numerous issues related to thermo-mechanical processing / properties, welding, powders, surface modification, hot isostatic pressure bonding, and alloy development.  Mr. Turek is an accomplished electron microscopist, and is recognized as an expert in the preparation and analysis of un-conventional thin foil TEM specimens. He has developed cross-section preparation techniques specifically for the analysis of nanometer sized corrosion films and coatings.  Mr. Turek also has extensive experience dealing with Government Specifications for nuclear applications, where he authored two Military Specifications for seamless tube and flat rolled materials supporting new design heat exchanger prototypes.

Upon graduation from The University of Pittsburgh in 1987 with a B.S. in Materials Science / Metallurgical Engineering, Mr. Turek accepted a position with Westinghouse Bettis Laboratory where he held a variety of positions that include: Process Development Engineer for zirconium and Inconel products, Lead Materials Engineer as dedicated SEM / TEM analyst, and as Senior Materials Engineer providing technical direction for all Metallography, SEM and TEM laboratory operations.  In 2004 Mr. Turek accepted a position at Matco Associates as a Senior Materials / Metallurgical Engineer with the Corrosion Engineering Group.
